A large, colorful abstract painting built for a living room, entryway, or gallery wall in need of an original statement piece.
Optimist takes its name and its spirit from Zoe Keating’s cello piece of the same title, a work built from layered loops that gather and lift rather than resolve into a single line. I wanted to carry that feeling into a still image: not to illustrate the music, but to let the same warmth register physically in the viewer.
The painting was made by pouring diluted acrylic directly onto the canvas and working it with my fingers, tapping into the wet paint to coax it into motion. Nothing here is brushed. Pigment spreads and branches on its own terms, settling into fine dark rivulets that thread and root across the surface. Against a cool field of pale blue, warm washes of salmon and peach open outward like something unfolding, punctuated by bursts of saturated yellow, blooming reds, pockets of settled blue, small notes of green, and two quiet clearings of white where the eye can rest – a colorful abstract composition built for a room that wants energy without losing calm.
This painting resists easy categorization. It speaks in textures, colors, and movement rather than representation, rooted firmly in abstraction. It draws us into a space beyond language, where intuition guides perception.
Whether we’re expressing or simply experiencing, painting is a mirror, a quiet, unspoken dialogue with our inner world. Through acts like this, we tap into something universal yet deeply personal. This work, in its organic complexity, reminds us that we-humans-are, as far as we know, one of the universe’s rare attempts to know itself.
Here, the act of painting becomes an act of remembering: that to look, to feel, to create, is to seek understanding. To stand before this form is to participate in that cosmic inquiry, where each contour and color becomes part of a larger meditation on being.
